Wisdom teeth, the third molars at the very back, usually come in between the late teens and mid-twenties. Many people have no trouble with them. Others do, because there is not enough room.
Problems they can cause
- Impaction: the tooth stays stuck under the gum or bone
- Infection and swollen gums around a partly erupted tooth
- Decay in the wisdom tooth or the tooth in front of it
- Damage to neighbouring teeth, or cysts
- Pain, stiffness or swelling at the back of the jaw
How we decide
We examine the area and take an x-ray to see the position of the teeth and roots. Healthy wisdom teeth that are fully through and easy to clean can often stay. If removal is advised, we will explain why, what is involved and what to expect. If your case is complex, we may refer you to a specialist.
Recovery
- Expect some swelling and soreness for a few days
- Use a cold pack, rest and soft foods
- Follow the aftercare instructions we give you, including how to keep your mouth clean
- Call us if you have severe pain, fever, or bleeding that will not stop
