At the clinic
What happens at an emergency appointment?
We'll ask about your symptoms, examine the affected area and explain any recommended X-rays. Your dentist will discuss what they find, treatment options and estimated costs before proceeding. Depending on your needs, the visit may focus on immediate care, with further treatment arranged for another appointment.
Knocked-out tooth? Act immediately. For a permanent adult tooth:
- Hold it by the crown, the white part normally visible above the gum. Avoid touching the root.
- If dirty, rinse gently with milk or saline. Do not scrub.
- If it slips back into the socket easily, gently replace it and bite on a clean cloth to hold it in place. Do not force it.
- If you cannot replace it, keep it in a container of milk.
- Seek emergency dental care immediately.
While you wait
- Rinse your mouth gently with warm water.
- Hold a cold compress against the cheek for swelling.
- Save any broken pieces.
Please avoid
- Do not place aspirin directly on the gum or tooth.
- Do not use sharp objects to remove anything stuck between teeth.
