A crown is a custom cap that covers a tooth, restoring its shape, size and strength. It protects a tooth that is too damaged for a filling to hold.
When a crown is recommended
- A large cavity or a large old filling that weakens the tooth
- A cracked or worn tooth
- After a root canal, to protect the tooth
- To hold a bridge in place or cover an implant
- To improve the shape or look of a tooth
What to expect
- We numb the area and shape the tooth to make room for the crown
- An impression or digital scan records the exact shape for your crown
- A temporary crown protects the tooth while the permanent one is made
- At the next visit, we check the fit and colour, then cement the permanent crown in place
Caring for your crown
Brush and floss as usual, taking extra care along the gum line where the crown meets the tooth. The tooth underneath can still decay, so regular check-ups remain important. Avoid chewing ice or very hard objects, and tell us if you grind your teeth, as a night guard can protect your crown.
