A filling repairs a tooth damaged by decay. We remove the decayed part of the tooth and fill the space so it works and looks like a natural tooth again.
What to expect
- We numb the area with a local anesthetic so you are comfortable
- The decay is removed and the tooth is cleaned
- The filling is placed, shaped and checked against your bite
- You can usually go back to your day right away, though your lips and tongue stay numb for a few hours
Materials
Tooth-coloured composite resin blends with your natural teeth and bonds to the tooth. Silver amalgam is strong and long-lasting and is used in some back teeth. We will talk through the options for your tooth, including appearance, strength and cost.
Afterward
- Wait until the numbness wears off before chewing, so you do not bite your cheek or tongue
- Mild sensitivity to hot, cold or biting is common for a few days
- Call us if your bite feels high, or if pain gets worse instead of better
- Regular check-ups let us monitor fillings, which can wear or leak around the edges over time
