Implants and dentures need regular care, just like natural teeth. Without it, bacteria can build up and cause gum inflammation and bone loss around implants, and sores, infection or bad breath with dentures.
Implant care visits
- Examine the gums and bone around each implant
- Clean with instruments made for implants, which do not scratch the surface
- Check the crown, the connector and your bite
- Review your home care and adjust it if needed
Denture care visits
- Check the fit and look for sore spots or irritation
- Professionally clean your dentures
- Check your gums, tongue and remaining teeth, and screen for oral cancer
- Recommend a reline or replacement when the fit changes
At home
- Implants: brush twice a day with a soft brush, and clean around them daily with interdental brushes, floss made for implants, or a water flosser
- Dentures: remove them at night, brush them with a denture brush and a non-abrasive cleaner, and rinse after meals
- Do not use harsh abrasives, bleach or hot water on dentures
Most people do well with visits about every three to six months. We will recommend a schedule based on your needs.
