Healthy habits start young. We aim to make every visit friendly and calm, so children feel comfortable at the dentist now and as they grow.
The first visit
We recommend a first visit around your child's first birthday, or within about six months of the first tooth. It is short and gentle. We look at the teeth and gums, talk with you about brushing, feeding and habits, and let your child get used to the chair and the room.
Ongoing care
- Check-ups and cleanings, usually about every six months
- Fluoride to strengthen enamel
- Sealants on back teeth to prevent cavities
- Fillings and other treatment, if needed, explained in child-friendly words
- Advice on thumb sucking, pacifiers, bottles and snacks
- Mouthguards for sports, and braces assessments as teeth come in
Tips for parents
- Start brushing when the first tooth appears. Use a grain of rice amount of fluoride toothpaste under age 3, and a pea size from age 3 to 6
- Help your child brush until they can tie their own shoelaces
- Keep the visit positive and avoid describing it as scary or painful
- If your child has a toothache or injury, call us right away
