TMJ & TMD

Care for jaw pain, clicking and tension.

The temporomandibular joints (TMJ) connect your lower jaw to your skull. Problems with the joints or the muscles around them are called temporomandibular disorders (TMD), and they are common.

Common symptoms

  • Pain or tenderness in the jaw, face or around the ear
  • Clicking, popping or grating when you open or close
  • Limited opening, or the jaw getting stuck or locking
  • Headaches, neck pain or earache
  • Difficulty chewing, or a bite that feels off

Possible causes

Teeth clenching or grinding, stress, injury, arthritis and bite problems can all play a part. Often it is a combination, and the cause is not always clear.

What we do

  • Review your history and examine your jaw, muscles and bite
  • Take x-rays when needed
  • Recommend self-care, such as a softer diet, heat, avoiding gum and wide yawning, and relaxation
  • Provide a custom splint or night guard when appropriate
  • Refer you for further assessment when needed

Most cases improve with simple, conservative care. If you have severe pain, a jaw that locks, or sudden changes after an injury, call us.
