If you feel anxious about dental care, have a strong gag reflex, or need longer or more complex treatment, sedation can help you feel relaxed and comfortable.
Options
- Nitrous oxide (laughing gas): breathed through a mask, it relaxes you, wears off within minutes and you can usually go back to your day
- Oral sedation: a pill taken before your appointment that leaves you relaxed and sleepy
- Combined sedation: oral sedation along with nitrous oxide
- IV sedation: medication given through a vein for a deeper level of relaxation
The right option depends on your health, the treatment and how you feel. We will talk through the choices with you.
Safety and preparation
- We review your health history and medications before recommending sedation
- Follow the fasting and medication instructions we give you
- For oral and IV sedation, arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you, and plan to rest for the rest of the day
- You will be monitored during treatment
Even if you do not need sedation, tell us if you are nervous. We can explain each step and go at your pace.
