Additional Care

Home of Smiles Dental Clinic offers treatment that goes beyond the standard dental care options to bring patients a number of procedures that can improve their health and their day-to-day lives. From techniques designed to ease anxiety during dental treatment to procedures that can address periodontal conditions and serious sleep disorders, our dentists in SW Edmonton are committed to helping you meet your needs.

Sedation: Oral and Laughing Gas

For many people, it can be intimidating to go to the dentist. We understand that some patients feel anxious or afraid to undergo specific dental treatments. That’s why our office offers sedation options to alleviate fear and anxiety.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses a mild sedative to manage special needs or anxiety during a procedure. It is important to note that dental sedation is not part of the pain management agents that we will give you during procedures that may induce pain. However, dental sedation can calm you to a point where you can handle receiving the treatment.

What are my Sedation Options?

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation, also called “conscious sedation,” involves you taking a prescribed dose of sedative before your procedure.

It can be used for both minimal and moderate sedation. Oral sedation is administered in pill form and should be ingested before your procedure. This sedation type will likely make you feel drowsy, and you may fall asleep, but you can be awakened easily.

Laughing Gas

Inhaled sedation is commonly used for minimal sedation. Nitrous oxide, more commonly known as laughing gas, is used to relax patients during dental procedures. You’ll be conscious while taking laughing gas, but because it’s gas, it wears off very quickly once you stop breathing it in.

If your other concerns about your sedation options, call our office. Our staff will be happy to answer your questions.

Halitosis (Bad Breath Care)

Our mouth contains millions of bacteria. Everyone occasionally experiences halitosis (bad breath). For example, morning breath is a common condition caused by the reduced saliva flow at night. This is just normal.

However, persistent bad breath can signal dental problems or other health problems. And it needs to be addressed by a professional.

How do I know if I have Halitosis?

We can help you assess whether you have a problem with halitosis. We’ll check all the possible aspects that could result in persistent bad breath.

Bone Grafting

Because of the prolonged absence of a tooth or multiple teeth, the jaw bone can be atrophied or degenerate. Bone Grafting can prevent jaw bone degeneration and provide support for future dental implants or dentures.

What is Bone Grafting?

Bone Grafting is the process of adding lost bone mass or augmenting the areas of the jaw bone that shrank or degenerated. It is a painless procedure necessary as a pre-prosthetic procedure for replacing dental implants or dentures, especially for older patients. The bone for dental grafting is sourced from cows, and these grafts are called xenografts

What should I do after the procedure?

During healing, you'll need to be very careful around the treatment site. You should avoid sharp foods that can damage both graft and gum tissue. Gently clean around the area to avoid post-operative infection.

Do you have any concerns with regards to Bone Grafting? Ask our friendly staff. Call us to book an appointment today!
